Tips against the mouse arm
Many graphic designers and programmers know it: the mouse arm. It really hurts and the first signs of it should be taken seriously. To ensure that it does not get so far, the right attitude and the right mouse count in the office work.

This is medically called also repetitive strain injury syndrome called, problem by constantly repeating movements. With burning pains in the hand and forearm, the mouse arm makes itself felt. Often the complaints occur in persons who work a lot with the mouse. "The mouse arm is a result of a bad strain," says a specialist in orthopedics, who is working with the mouse to make many small, similar movements.

As an epidemic, Ergonomics Engineer describes the disease: "We use the computer not only at work but also carry out the same movements even on the home computer - this is a high burden on the hand and arm," says the specialist from the Institute for Work and social research Ergonomic.

In order to prevent the mouse arm, the experts recommend several measures: the obvious idea of ​​using an ergonomically shaped mouse is not the best. "The perfect ergonomic mouse does not exist", explains psychologist from the Technical University. Each hand is different and therefore not every mouse is suitable for every user. For people who rarely work with the mouse, an ergonomic mouse is sufficient, the back of which is round adapts to the hand, and the fingers can be slightly spread and loose.

Some manufacturers offer mice in different sizes as well as for right or left handers. Here you have to try out what feels good. Also, mice, which are suitable for right and left-handers, can provide the remedy if one is accustomed to using also the other hand for the guidance of the mouse. "The more the strain on the muscles, the better it is for the arm," explains Christian. Therefore, the experts advise not only to use the mouse but as many different input devices as possible.

High-angle mouse can prevent discomfort
Better than the mouse, which lies flat on the table - even if it is ergonomically shaped - are according to the experts some mouse alternatives. "In the conventional mouse, the hand has to be turned inwards in order to grab the mouse," explains expert. A healthier input device is, for example, the vertical or high-edge mouse. These are, for example, from Air or 3M. This mouse is held similar to a joystick.

For office work, enough is also a roller mouse. "This is in front of the keyboard and is symmetrical. Better still a pen as an input device. Pen mice offer among other Toshiba. If you have a lot of work with the mouse and have room on the desk, you can also think about the purchase of a tablet, which is also served with a pen. "The tablet is an absolute pointing device, the user interface is the smaller screen, which makes it unnecessary to repeat the movements. Graphics tablets are about Wacom and Hansom.

"Many commands can be executed without a mouse," says an orthopedist. The touchpad of the laptop should be used as well as commands via keyboard shortcuts. And even if you use different input media and so the strain on the muscles varies, it is advisable to pay attention to the correct sitting position and to take regular breaks. "It is important that the hand has a change, and one should make strength and stretching exercises.

If in spite of preventive measures, permanent pain is felt in the hand or arm, a doctor should be consulted, who is familiar with the problem of mouse arms. This is usually an orthopedist or sports physician. "But for too long, you should not spare your hand with the diagnosis mouse arm. It is better to buy and use new input devices.
